World Turtle Day, Lucky Penny Day, Declaration of the Bab, more

May 23rd, 2011 is World Turtle Day, Lucky Penny Day, Declaration of the Bab, Birthday of Guru Amar Das Day, Victoria Day, World Crohn's and Colitis Day, and National Taffy Day.

Today is World Turtle Day! Take a moment to admire these creatures that carry their homes wherever they go. Nice lifestyle.

In these iffy economic times, who among us can afford to reject the luck and value of a stray penny? "A penny saved is a penny earned," as Ben Franklin used to say. But wait - a fact check shows that Ben Franklin is falsely credited for the saying! The original quote, "A penny spar'd is twice got," comes from George Herbert's Outlandish Proverbs, ca. 1633. Happy Lucky Penny Day.

The Declaration of the Bab is "one of the greatest and most significant of all festivals," commemorating the inception of the Baha'i faith in 1844.

Followers of the Sikh religion celebrate the Birthday of Guru Amar Das Day today. Guru Amar Das was the third of the ten Sikh Gurus.

Victoria Day in Canada celebrates the birth of Queen Victoria, who was actually born on May 24th, 1819. The holiday is observed on the Monday before May 25th.

World Crohn's and Colitis Day is meant to raise awareness about Crohn's and Colitis, in the hope of finding a cure. The day was founded in 2007 by Josh Golder, director of True Guts.

National Taffy Day is always celebrated on May 23rd. Amazingly, the salt water version of this candy was invented by accident in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, when ocean water swamped a candy stand during a storm! Salt water taffy, a delicious combination of sweet and savory, was born.
