Today is the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade - a long title for an important commemoration. The theme for 2011 is "The Transatlantic slave trade: the living legacy of 30 million untold stories."
Old New Year's Day is celebrated primarily in Russia. Most countries abandoned the Julian calendar in favor of the Gregorian calendar in the 1500s, but Russia didn't adopt it until 1918.
