Tarantula Festival, Frugal Fun Day, Fire Pup Day, more

October 1st, 2011, is the Tarantula Festival, International Frugal Fun Day, Fire Pup Day, World Card Making Day, International Day of Older Persons, Astronomy Day, National Pumpkin Festival, World Vegetarian Day, Madonna del Lume Celebration, Coffee Day, San Marino Captains Regent Day, National Day (China), United Nations Day (Palau), Armed Forces Day (South Korea), Independence Day (Cyprus), Independence Day (Nigeria), and National Homemade Cookies Day.

The Tarantula Festival and Barbeque takes place today in Morgan Hill, California. I'm sad to report they don't actually barbeque the tarantulas.

On International Frugal Fun Day, visit a free museum or a park in your area, or simply stay home and play board games! Fun doesn't have to cost money.

Fire Pup Day honors the loyal dog that rides in the fire truck along with the firemen.

World Card Making Day is a time to show off your creative flair. Make a birthday card, a thank-you card, or a whole stack of holiday cards to send in December!

The United Nations sponsors International Day of Older Persons on October 1st. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon writes: "In the current fiscal environment, we must be vigilant in ensuring that the provision of social protection, long-term care and access to public health for the elderly is not undermined. On this International Day of Older Persons, I call on governments and communities everywhere to provide more opportunities for their ageing populations."

Astronomy Day takes place twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Check with local space and science museums for special events on this year's fall date.

The National Pumpkin Festival is celebrated on the first Saturday in October in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Events include a parade, a pageant, and contests.

Today is World Vegetarian Day, not to be confused with yesterday's Hug a Vegetarian Day.

The North Beach area of San Francisco, California, observes the Italian Madonna del Lume Celebration on the first Saturday in October, Events include the blessing of the fleet, a dinner and dance, and other festive events on Saturday and Sunday. Madonna del Lume, Madonna of the Light, is the patron saint of fisherman, guiding them safely home after time at sea.

Japan celebrates Coffee Day on October 1st.

San Marino celebrates Captains Regent Day, an elaborate twice-a-year ceremony during which two Regent Captains, the heads of state for San Marino, are invested with their power. Candidates must be at least twenty-five years of age and residents of San Marino.

China observes National Day today, the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Palau observes United Nations Day on October 1st.

The first day of October marks Armed Forces Day, a national holiday for South Korea.

Cyprus celebrates independence from British rule today, Independence Day.

Nigeria observes Independence Day on October 1st.

After you've finished your beautiful hand-made cards (earlier in this post), continue in the same sentimental, old-fashioned manner and whip up some homemade cookies. Today is National Homemade Cookies Day.
