Name Your Car Day, Erntedankfest, Intergeneration Day, more

October 2nd, 2011 is Name Your Car Day, Phileas Fogg's Wager Day, Erntedankfest, Intergeneration Day, Change a Light Day, World Farm Animals Day, National Custodial Worker Day, Country Inn Bed-and-Breakfast Day, International Day of Non-Violence, World Communion Sunday, Feast of the Guardian Angels, Independence Day (Guinea), and National Fried Scallops Day.

Does your car have a name, or does the concept creep you out because of the movie Christine? Today is Name Your Car Day.

Today is Phileas Fogg's Wager Day, as depicted in the Jules Verne novel, Around the World in Eighty Days. Main character Phileas Fogg made the following wager on October 2nd: "I will bet twenty thousand pounds against anyone who wishes that I will make the tour of the world in eighty days or less; in nineteen hundred and twenty hours, or a hundred and fifteen thousand two hundred minutes." SPOILER ALERT: December 21st is celebrated as Phileas Fogg Wins a Wager Day.

Germany observes Erntedankfest, Harvest-Thanksgiving-Day, on the Sunday after the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox.

Intergeneration Day, the first Sunday in October, is a day to "connect generations through communication, celebration, and education."

To celebrate Change a Light Day, replace an old light bulb with a new, energy-efficient bulb.

World Farm Animals Day is "dedicated to exposing, mourning, and memorializing the more than 65 billion cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and other land animals who needlessly suffer and die every year in the world's farms and slaughterhouses."

Today's the day to do something nice for the person who keeps your workspace clean. Celebrate National Custodial Worker Day.

Country Inn Bed-and-Breakfast Day takes place on the first Sunday in October, to encourage everyone to try the bed-and-breakfast experience.

The United Nations sponsors International Day of Non-Violence on the birth date of Mahatma Gandhi.
