Dictionary Day, Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters, more

October 16th, 2011, is Dictionary Day, Feral Cat Day, Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters, National Boss' Day, World Food Day, and National Liqueur Day.

Dictionary Day commemorates the birth date of Noah Webster, author of A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, considered to be the first American dictionary. Make a list of words you're unsure of - perhaps starting with "compendious" - then look them up!

Feral Cat Day is meant to prevent unnecessary killing of outdoor cats, via spay/neuter programs and educational outreach.

The Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters campaign encourages churches across the United States to ring their bells in honor of firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty during the past year. The event is part of the 30th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.

National Boss' Day is observed on October 16th. Since this year it falls on a Sunday, some move the celebration to October 17th, the nearest business day. Either way, show your boss some appreciation. Jobs are valuable commodities these days.

The theme for World Food Day 2011 is "Food prices - from crisis to stability." Rising prices harm the poorest people the most.

Raise a glass or two in celebration of National Liqueur Day. Just make sure someone else drives you home.
