King Kamehameha Day, Wicket World of Croquet, Belmont Stakes, more

June 11th, 2011 is King Kamehameha Day, Wicket World of Croquet, Belmont Stakes, Evacuation Day, and National German Chocolate Cake Day.

King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii, USA, features a parade with Pa'u horse riders bedecked in flowers. The day honors Kamehameha I, the chief who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795.

The 17th Annual Wicket World of Croquet takes place on Saturday, June 11th, 2011 at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Forty teams join the Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Alice in a croquet tournament to benefit Indianapolis public schools.

The 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes takes place today in New York, USA. Some top contenders include Animal Kingdom, Brilliant Speed, Nehro, Master of Hounds, Mucho Macho Man, Shackleford, and Stay Thirsty. Horses sure have unique names.

Evacuation Day in Libya commemorates the date in 1970 when the United States evacuated Wheelus Air Base and left Libya.

Sorry, European friends, but German chocolate cake has nothing to do with Germany. Who knew? It's actually named for Samuel German, who created a sweet baking chocolate in 1852 while working for Baker's Chocolate Company. Anyway, have yourself a slice of gooey caramel-pecan-coconut-chocolate decadence on National German Chocolate Cake Day.
