Martin Luther King Day, Bill Cosby Sweater Day, Buttercrunch Day, more

January 20th, 2014, is Martin Luther King Day, Civil Rights Day, Human Rights Day, Robert E. Lee Day, National Day of Service, Bill Cosby Sweater Day, Penguin Awareness Day, Disc Jockey Day, International Fetish Day, National Buttercrunch Day, Junk Food News Alert Day, and National Cheese Lover's Day.

Martin Luther King Day, always observed on the third Monday in January, honors a fearless civil rights activist whose life ended all too soon. Some U.S. states combine the holiday with Civil Rights Day, Human Rights Day, or Robert E. Lee Day. In the humanitarian spirit, many people honor Dr. King with a National Day of Service.

Blue Monday is considered to be the most depressing day of the year, factoring in weather, post-holiday blues, post-holiday debt, and failure at sticking with New Year's resolutions. A complicated formula is used to determine the exact date each year, but I'm too depressed to explain it.

Remember those crazy sweaters Bill Cosby wore when he portrayed Dr. Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show? Well, as a tribute to those fabulous sweaters, today is Bill Cosby Sweater Day.

Penguin Awareness Day celebrates those charming non-flying birds that are always dressed for a cocktail party.

Apparently today is Disc Jockey Day, but not much info is available. Have a party or go to a club, and show some appreciation for the tune-spinner!

In the interest of full holiday disclosure, let it be known that today is International Fetish Day. Celebrants show their unity by wearing purple. Now you know.

National Buttercrunch Day is a day to fulfill your craving for both sweet and crunchy. Enjoy!

Many holiday sites claim that Junk Food News Alert Day takes place today, but I can find no, uh, news alerts to that effect. Oh well. Have some potato chips and soda while reading about junk food.

National Cheese Lover's Day has something for everyone. Whether you prefer a sophisticated brie, an assertive cheddar, a subtle Swiss, a salty feta, or a child-friendly American, enjoy some cheese today.
