World Freedom Day commemorates the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The organizers state: "Our aim is to have organisations around the world celebrate World Freedom Day by releasing white balloons, and to commemorate the historical importance of this day by holding conferences or colloquia, or private discussions."
Kristallnacht, the "Night of Broken Glass," is a remembrance of horrific anti-Jewish events that took place on November 9th and 10th, 1938, in Germany, Austria, and parts of Czechoslovakia. Streets were lined with shards of glass from shattered windows of synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses, and family homes.
The patron saint of Madrid, Spain, is honored on Virgen de la Almudena.
Cambodia observes Independence Day on November 9th.
Today is National Scrapple Day. For the uninitiated, scrapple is a combination of pork heart, ribs, liver, seasoning, broth, and cornmeal, baked in loaves, then sliced and fried in butter. The Pennsylvania Dutch aren't famous for low-cal dishes, after all.
