National Night Out, Kadooment Day, Ice Cream Sandwich Day, more

August 2nd, 2011, is National Night Out, Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show, Lady of the Angels Day, Fiesta La Patrona, Barbados Kadooment Day, and National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.

The United States observes the 28th annual National Night Out tonight, except for Texas, which observes the event on October 4th. The National Night Out is meant to deter crime and drug use.

The Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show takes place on the first Tuesday in August. The festival, which originated in 1800, is the oldest surviving such celebration in the United Kingdom.

Costa Rica celebrates Lady of the Angels Day, honoring the appearance of a young girl called La Negrita.

Fiesta La Patrona takes place in Pollenca, Spain. Villagers dress in pajamas and take to the streets with sticks and swords, to reenact the 1550 battle between local hero Joan Mas and invading Barbary Pirates.

Citizens of Barbados celebrate Kadooment Day today. They harvest and sell their crops in a parade and carnival atmosphere.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day is always observed on August 2nd, helping us through a hot day near the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
