Zhongyuani, the Hungry Ghost Festival, takes place on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month. In 2011, the date is August 14th. Some Chinese believe that this is a dangerous time, when whistling, shouting, standing near water, or sitting in a "reserved" empty chair could cause unsuspecting souls to be dragged into the underworld.
Navajo Code Talkers Day honors patriotic Navajo soldiers who, despite lacking the right to vote in the United States, played a pivotal role in helping the U.S. during World War II. They assigned Navajo words to military words, creating a code their enemies could not crack.
August 14th, the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered during World War II, is observed as V-J Day or Victory over Japan Day. Some observe V-J Day on August 15th. Others choose September 2nd, when the formal surrender took place on the U.S.S. Missouri.
