Obon is a Buddhist tradition in which households welcome the spirits of their deceased ancestors into their homes. Families place lanterns at their homes to guide and welcome the spirits. At the end of Obon families place the lanterns in lakes, rivers, or seas to guide the spirits back to their world. The event takes place from the 13th to the 15th of July or August, depending on whether the solar or lunar calendar is used to determine the seventh month.
Today is Beans 'n' Franks Day. Eat them mixed together as an entree or serve as a sandwich with beans on the side, your choice.
These days people don't seem to need an excuse to eat french fries, but just in case you do, be aware that today is National French Fries Day. Please pass the ketchup. Or is it catsup? Never mind.
