Ash Wednesday - the day after Mardi Gras - marks the beginning of Lent for many Christians. Some attend services and receive ashes on their foreheads, representing mortality, sorrow for sins, change, and forgiveness.

On World Read Aloud Day, read aloud to your kids. Better yet - if they're able, let your kids read aloud to you! Oh, and when they do, give them your undivided attention. No TV, no gadgets.

Today is Spread the Word to End the Word Day, a campaign to remind everyone that use of the word "retarded" is hurtful. Pledge to stop using the "R-word." Actor John C. McGinley is active in this campaign.

I can't find much documentation for this holiday, but since I'm a proud mom I'll mention that today is Say Hi to Mom Day.

National Multiple Personality Day is a day to either share jokes about multiple personalities, or, if you know someone who actually has multiple personality disorder, learn how you can help.

Crispus Attucks Day honors a man thought to be a runaway slave, the first to die in the Boston Massacre.

The island nation of Vanuatu celebrates Custom Chiefs Day, in appreciation of the many tribal chiefs who reject European influence in favor of preserving local customs.

Look for the tell-tale orange-stained fingers that reveal celebrants of National Cheese Doodle Day. Join them when you feel snacky.
