World Smile Day, Blessing of the Animals Day, more

October 4th, 2013, is World Smile Day, National Diversity Day, Lee National Denim Day, Mahalaya, Ten-Four Day, Toot Your Own Flute Day, Improve Your Office Day, Feast Day of Saint Francis of Asissi, Blessing of the Animals Day, World Animal Day, Golf Lovers Day, Reconciliation Day, Independence Day (Lesotho), Independence Day (Uruguay), National Vodka Day, National Taco Day, and Kanelbullens Dag.

The first Friday in October is World Smile Day. This holiday requires no expense and no advance preparation, so just smile and enjoy.

The first Friday in October is National Diversity Day. Despite our differences, all of us share this beautiful planet. Why not embrace our differences, along with the common bonds that make us human?

Lee National Denim Day is a fundraising campaign for breast cancer research. Employees at Lee Jeans, along with employees at other companies, make donations in exchange for the privilege of wearing jeans to work.

Today is Mahalaya, observed seven days before Durga Puja

Ten-Four Day is a tribute to ham radio operators who give a big "ten-four" when they agree. 10/4 is the perfect date for this holiday.

With apologies to my daughter, Toot Your Own Flute Day isn't the time for an impromptu flute recital. Rather, it's a time to share your talents, to self-promote.

How many hours a week do you spend in your office? Might as well make it nice, a reflection of your personality, and might as well make it ergonomic, a fancy way of saying comfy. October 4th is Improve Your Office Day.

October 4th is the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Asissi. Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals and ecology.

In remembrance of Saint Francis of Asissi and his love of all creatures, his feast day is the Blessing of the Animals Day, also known as Blessing of the Pets Day. People bring their beloved animals to church for blessings, either on October 4th or the Sunday nearest.

Continuing with the animal theme, today is World Animal Day, "a special opportunity for anyone who loves animals."

Take to the links or the green today if you're a golfer. Celebrate Golf Lovers Day.

On Reconciliation Day, everyone around the world is invited to "remember, honor, communicate with, reconcile and to celebrate with family, friends - anyone with whom reconciliation would bring a feeling of wholeness, harmony and peace."

Lesotho observes Independence Day on October 4th.

Uruguay also observes Independence Day today.

Cheers to you - today is National Vodka Day.

Who can resist the perfect balance of spices, textures, and flavors that make up a simple taco? Celebrate National Taco Day. The founders of this day probably wouldn't include spaghetti tacos, created by Spencer Shay, a character on the tween show iCarly.

Kanelbullens Dag, Cinnamon Roll Day, is a great excuse to dive into a sticky, sugary, cinnamony delicacy. You don't have to live in Switzerland to indulge.
