Happy Mew Year for Cats Day, Science Fiction Day, more

January 2nd, 2013, is Happy Mew Year for Cats Day, Run It Up the Flagpole and See If Anyone Salutes Day, National Pet Travel Safety Day, National Science Fiction Day, Motivation and Inspiration Day, National Personal Trainer Awareness Day, Kakizome, Berchtold Day, National Cream Puff Day, Swiss Cheese Day, and National Buffet Day.

Okay, the ball dropped in Times Square on New Year's Eve, but that ball wasn't made of yarn. Today is the day to pamper your cat, to help him or her welcome the new year in true feline style. Today is Happy Mew Year for Cats Day.

Run It Up the Flagpole and See If Anyone Salutes Day is simply a day to float new ideas. Take an opinion poll!

On National Pet Travel Safety Day, think about the safety of your pets when you travel, especially on the road. Animals should not be allowed to move about freely in a car. They can potentially distract the driver or, even worse, suffer preventable injuries in a collision.

National Science Fiction Day celebrates all things science fiction, from books to movies to lifestyle. The date was chosen because sci-fi author Isaac Asimov claimed it as his birthday.

Motivation and Inspiration Day, created by motivational speaker Kevin McCrudden, is a day to "take action to make things happen."

If you have a personal trainer, do something special for him or her today, National Personal Trainer Awareness Day.

Japan observes Kakizome, when children create special new year calligraphy.

Switzerland celebrates Berchtold Day in honor of Duke Berchtold V of Zahringen, founder of the city of Bern. The duke went on a hunt, promising to name his new city after the first animal he killed. The animal who received that dubious honor was a bear, "Bern" in German.

National Cream Puff Day reminds me of my mother. She used to make these delicious treats - puffed hollow balls filled with custard.

Celebrate Swiss Cheese Day, honoring one of the few food items where holes are desirable.

National Buffet Day can be enjoyable, but remember - take all you want, eat all you take!
