Cyber Safety Awareness Day, Pack Rat Day, more

May 17th, 2012, is National Cyber Safety Awareness Day, Pack Rat Day, Rubber Band Day, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, World Hypertension Day, International Day Against Homophobia, Ascension Day, Constitution Day (Norway), and National Cherry Cobbler Day.

National Cyber Safety Awareness Day is meant to draw attention to the issue of cyberbullying and other online dangers faced by children. An aside from me: in June 2011 Consumer Reports found that more than one-third of Facebook users are under the age of thirteen - the minimum age required - and a large percentage of those young users are not properly supervised by their parents. Parents need to wake up to the real danger that lurks online!

Pack Rat Day is a time to celebrate or condemn hoarding, depending on your point of view. The expression "pack rat" is inspired by an actual rodent, the pack rat.

Happy Rubber Band Day! Celebrate an indispensible item that has yet to be complicated by modern technology. Make a rubber band sculpture or some rubber band jewelry.

The theme of the 2012 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, sponsored by the United Nations, is "Women and Girls in ICT." ICT is information and communication technology.

On World Hypertension Day everyone is urged to prevent and control high blood pressure, a silent killer. Do you know your numbers?

The International Day Against Homophobia is always observed on May 17th, the date on which the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

Ascension Day commemorates the ascension of Jesus into heaven. The holiday is observed 39 days after Easter.

Today is Constitution Day in Norway, commemorating the signing of their constitution in 1814.

National Cherry Cobbler Day means two servings of dessert, right? Amazingly, early American settlers ate cobblers as their main meal, according to What's Cooking America.
