October 15th, 2012, is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, National Grouch Day, Global Handwashing Day, International Day of Rural Women, White Cane Safety Day, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, Mahalaya, National Heroes' Day, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, Mother's Day (Malawi), National Chicken Cacciatore Day, National Roast Pheasant Day, and National Mushroom Day.

The third Monday in October is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day. How many icons, shortcuts, and widgets do you need, anyway?

Today is National Grouch Day, endorsed by Sesame Street Magazine.

Global Handwashing Day was created in 2008 to "foster and support a global culture of handwashing with soap, shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing in every country, [and] raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap."

October 15th is the International Day of Rural Women. United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon writes, "Empowering rural women is crucial for ending hunger and poverty. By denying women rights and opportunities, we deny their children and societies a better future. This is why the United Nations recently launched a programme to empower rural women and enhance food security."

White Cane Safety Day is a time to raise awareness among sighted people, regarding safety for independent individuals who happen to be blind.
