Oh, I could go on and on about the wonders of this first holiday, honoring those who like to use many words when few would do, but then again perhaps you're busy and you're hoping I'll cut to the chase. What? It's already too late for me to cut to the chase? What does the expression "cut to the chase" mean, anyway? Wait - what was my original point? Oh, right. Today is Babbling Day.

Today is Count Your Buttons Day. I actually have a collection of odd buttons in my sewing kit. The array of colors and shapes pleases me, and some of the buttons are old enough to be antiques. But if I do take time to count them, should I stop with that? What about the buttons on the clothes my family and I have hanging in our closets? Perhaps I'll think about it next year, if the world is still turning.

Reptile Awareness Day celebrates those critters that some love, others despise (or misunderstand). The folks at ReptileChannel.com point out that this holiday has a "RAD" acronym.

Global Iodine Deficiency Day is meant to raise awareness of the physical problems that result from iodine deficiency, including brain damage.

October 21st is the Feast Day of Saint Ursula. She is the patron saint of students.

Honduras observes Armed Forces Day on October 21st.
Today might be Caramel Apple Day, but if you have other plans this holiday comes around again in just ten days, on Halloween.

In the estimable opinion of the blogger(s) at Months of Edible Celebrations, October 21st should be designated Pop Rocks Day in honor of  William A. Mitchell, creator. I wholeheartedly agree! Mitchell, who was born on this date, also invented Cool Whip and Tang. One man, three iconic concoctions.

Orionids Meteor Shower 2013

The 2013 Orionids Meteor Shower, potentially visible from October 2nd through November 7th, will be at its peak on the night of October 20th and the morning of October 21st. Like the ETA Aquarids Meteor Shower, the Orionids takes place when the earth passes through the dust of Halley's Comet. The meteor shower is visible in both hemispheres.

City lights, called light pollution, can interfere with viewing. So can reflected moonlight. The recently full moon will affect visibility. Pay close attention, because the Orionids are known to be especially speedy.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation they appear to be near. The Orionids Meteor Shower appears near Orion the Hunter.

October 19th, 2013, is Sweetest Day, Bridge Day, Evaluate Your Life Day, Mother Teresa Day, and Seafood Bisque Day.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October. The event originated in Cleveland, Ohio, in the middle of the twentieth century, when a man decided to distribute small gifts to orphans and shut-ins. Over time the sentiment expanded to included more cities and to embrace acts of kindness to anyone whose spirits could use a lift.

Bridge Day in Fayette, West Virginia is the one day every year when people are allowed to BASE jump from the New River Gorge Bridge into the gorge below. BASE stands for Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth.

I'm an admirer of Danica McKellar, an actress and mathematician who encourages young girls to explore the world of mathematics. Ada Lovelace, actually Lady Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was a computing pioneer of sorts. She published an article about an Analytical Engine in 1842.

Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity is a day for silent protest against abortion in the United States. Participants wear red arm bands and duct tape, and also distribute informational fliers.

Today is National Grouch Day, endorsed by Sesame Street Magazine.

Global Handwashing Day was created in 2008 to "foster and support a global culture of handwashing with soap, shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing in every country, [and] raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap."

October 15th is the International Day of Rural Women. United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon writes, "Empowering rural women is crucial for ending hunger and poverty. By denying women rights and opportunities, we deny their children and societies a better future. This is why the United Nations recently launched a programme to empower rural women and enhance food security."

White Cane Safety Day is a time to raise awareness among sighted people, regarding safety for independent individuals who happen to be blind.

October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day to remember the little lives that ended all too soon.

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is meant to raise awareness about prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS among Hispanics.

October 14th, 2013, is Columbus Day (U.S.), Native Americans' Day, Thanksgiving (Canada), Health and Sports Day, Be Bald and Be Free Day, National Day (Yemen), and National Chocolate Covered Insect Day.

Christopher Columbus didn't discover America, since Native Americans were already living there, but he did bring awareness to Europe and prove that the earth isn't flat. The second Monday in October is celebrated as Columbus Day.

Some parts of the United States observe Native Americans' Day along with (or instead of) Columbus Day. The day is also observed by some as Indigenous People's Day.

The second Monday in October is Thanksgiving in Canada, a time to give thanks for the year's harvest and good fortune.

Japan celebrates Health and Sports Day on the second Monday in October, commemorating the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The event is celebrated in October to avoid summer rains. Children are the focus, with many activities that encourage exercise and healthy competition.

October 12th, 2013, is Costume Swap Day, Universal Music Day, National Chess Day, International Migratory Bird Day, Ashtami, Columbus Day (actual date), Native American Day, Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race), Dia de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day), Fiesta Nacional de Espana (National Day), Dia de la Resistencia (Day of Indigenous Resistance), Fossil Day, Day of Six Billion, Moment of Frustration Scream Day, Freethought Day, Old Farmer's Day, Feast Day of Our Lady of Aparecida, Independence Day (Equatorial Guinea), Cookbook Launch Day, and National Gumbo Day.

In southern parts of the Americas, including Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, the second Saturday in October is International Migratory Bird Day. In the United States and Canada, the event is observed on the second Saturday in May.

This year Ashtami, or Mahashtami, part of the Durga Puja festival, falls on October 12th.

October 12th is the actual date of Columbus Day or Native American Day, when Christopher Columbus first set foot in America, although the United States generally observes the holiday on the second Monday in October. The event is not a celebration for all, as the arrival of Europeans meant loss of land and freedom for many indigenous people. Spanish-speaking countries observe the event today as Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race), Dia de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day), or Fiesta Nacional de Espana (National Day). Venezuela observes Dia de la Resistencia (Day of Indigenous Resistance).

Fossil Day honors all fossils, but the holiday is also embraced as the fifth and final event of Cephalopod Awareness Days. Don't confuse this celebration with National Fossil Day, which will take place this year on October 17th.

Day of Six Billion is a reason for concern, not for celebration. According to the UNFPA, the earth's population reached 6,000,000,000 on or about October 12th, 1999. Incidentally, the Day of Seven Billion occurred on October 31st, 2011. Most sobering of all is this World Population Clock, in real time. If this doesn't scare you, I don't know what will.

If you're having a bad day, if you're worried about overpopulation, if you're fed up with politicians and partisanship, or if you've simply run out of coffee, vent your stress with a primal scream. Today is Moment of Frustration Scream Day.

Freethought Day is meant to increase awareness and tolerance of others' beliefs or lack thereof. According to Secular Seasons, "In this day and age in the United States, discrimination, hatred, and bias against freethinkers is still allowed, even promoted, by many in this country."

During this harvest season, remember the ones who tend the crops. Celebrate Old Farmer's Day.

Brazil celebrates the Feast Day of Our Lady of Aparecida on October 12th. The Patroness of Brazil is also known as Our Lady Who Appeared.

Equatorial Guinea observes Independence Day on this date, celebrating freedom from Spanish rule since 1968.

Draconid Meteor Shower 2013

The 2013 Draconid Meteor Shower will be at its peak on October 7th and 8th, around nightfall and early evening. This meteor shower can be seen anywhere across the globe.

City lights, called light pollution, can interfere with viewing. So can reflected moonlight, but the current nearly-new moon means the meteor shower will show its full glory.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation they appear to be near. The Draconid Meteor Shower appears near the constellation Draco the Dragon.

To celebrate Change a Light Day, replace an old light bulb with a new, energy-efficient bulb (unless you, like me, are bothered by the quality of light put out by the new bulbs, or if you are concerned about their mercury content).

Germany celebrates Erntedankfest, a Thanksgiving and harvest festival, on the first Sunday in October.

International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat, sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, is observed on a random Sunday in September or October, as far as I can determine. "The Day of Prayer began in 1983 to make housing a matter of conscience. The intent was to place in the hearts, minds and souls of people everywhere the idea that poverty housing is unacceptable. The New Testament passage from 1 John 3:17 teaches that we must respond to those in need." 

World Communion Sunday is observed on the first Sunday in October.

Mad Hatter Day relates to the character in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. An original illustration in the book shows the Mad Hatter with a slip of paper attached to his hat - a slip which reads, "In this style 10/6." The 10/6 is the inspiration for this holiday on October 6th. Never mind that the 10/6 could mean the 10th day of June or indicate a price.

Jackie Mayer Rehab Day celebrates the courage of Jackie Mayer, Miss America 1963, who suffered a massive stroke at the age of 28. Today she serves as an inspiration to many with her speeches of hope and encouragement.

National Physician's Assistant Day honors those who help keep medical offices running smoothly, helping patients and freeing physicians to perform at their peak.

Ivy Day is a public holiday in Ireland, honoring politician and erstwhile hero, Charles Stewart Parnell. He fell out of favor with some, due to his divorce, perhaps contributing to his early death. Celebrants wear a sprig of green ivy on this day.

October 6th is Armed Forces Day in Egypt.

Turkmenistan observes Earthquake Remembrance Day on this date, the anniversary of a devastating quake in 1948.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National German-American Day in 1983, the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the ship Concord, the "German Mayflower."

My daughter would eagerly celebrate National Noodle Day every day. The official date, however, is October 6th.

Frugal Fun Day, Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters, more

October 5th, 2013, is Tarantula Festival and Barbeque, International Frugal Fun Day, World Card Making Day, National Family Fire Drill Day, National Pumpkin Festival, Madonna del Lume Celebration, Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters, Do Something Nice Day, World Teachers' Day, Proclamation of Republic (Portugal), Constitution Day (Vanuatu), and National Apple Betty Day.

The Tarantula Festival and Barbeque takes place on the first Saturday in October, in Morgan Hill, California. I'm sad to report they don't actually barbeque the tarantulas.

On International Frugal Fun Day, visit a free museum or a park in your area, or simply stay home and play board games! Fun doesn't have to cost money.

World Card Making Day is a time to show off your creative flair. Make a birthday card, a thank-you card, or a whole stack of holiday cards to send in December!

On National Family Fire Drill Day, take time to plan escape routes for your family in the event of fire, and then actually practice your escape. Don't forget to designate a rendezvous point, somewhere outside.

The National Pumpkin Festival is celebrated on the first Saturday in October, in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Events include a parade, a pageant, and contests.

The North Beach area of San Francisco, California, observes the Italian Madonna del Lume Celebration on the first Saturday in October, Events include the blessing of the fleet, a dinner and dance, and other festive events on Saturday and Sunday. Madonna del Lume, Madonna of the Light, is the patron saint of fisherman, guiding them safely home after time at sea.

Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters is a time to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives to protect the rest of us from the devastation of fire.

Even if it goes against your mood, do something nice for someone today. You may be surprised to find that you benefit as much as the recipient of your kindness. Celebrate Do Something Nice Day.

Gold Star Mother's Day is always observed on the last Sunday in September.
