The 3rd Saturday in August is International Homeless Animals Day. Candlelight vigils will be held around the world.

On this day in 1998, then-President Bill Clinton uttered his famous words to a grand jury: "It depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' is." Today is National Relaxation Day. Does that mean I should take the day off and not finish this blog post? Nah. But I will find a few moments to sit back, chill, and simply... be. So should you. De-stressing is healthy.

Take a chance on something outside of your comfort zone today, perhaps something you've never tried before. Even if your attempt is a complete bust you'll be successful, because today is National Failure Day.

On this date in 1877, Thomas Edison suggested the word "hello" as the standard telephone greeting, rather than Alexander Graham Bell's suggestion, "ahoy." Happy Hello Day.

Chauvin Day honors (or dishonors) Nicholas Chauvin, a French soldier who idolized Napoleon and anything French. He became an object of ridicule because of his blind devotion, inspiring the word chauvinism. According to Merriam-Webster, chauvinism means:

1. excessive or blind patriotism
2. undue partiality or attachment to a group or place to which one belongs or has belonged
3. an attitude of superiority toward members of the opposite sex; behavior expressive of such an attitude

Before researching this, I only knew about the third definition. There's always something new to learn.

South Korea observes Independence Day on August 15th, even though the country gained independence on August 13th, 1948.

August 14th, 2013, is Navajo Code Talkers Day, V-J Day, Wiffle Ball Day, National Financial Awareness Day, Independence Day (Pakistan), and National Creamsicle Day.

Navajo Code Talkers Day honors patriotic Navajo soldiers who, despite lacking the right to vote in the United States, played a pivotal role in helping the U.S. during World War II. They assigned Navajo words to military words, creating a code their enemies could not crack.

August 14th, the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered during World War II, is observed as V-J Day or Victory over Japan Day. Some observe V-J Day on August 15th. Others choose September 2nd, when the formal surrender took place on the U.S.S. Missouri.

Today is Wiffle Ball Day, commemorating the date in 1953 when the game was first introduced.

National Financial Awareness Day is a time to honestly assess your financial situation, your attitude toward money, and your best plan of action for a secure retirement. If only our government would do the same.

Because Thomas Edison invented the phonograph on August 12th, it is the proposed date for the national celebration of Vinyl Record Day. The Vinyl Record Day nonprofit organization is dedicated to "the preservation of the cultural influence, the recordings and the cover art of the vinyl record; celebrating our fondest music with friends and family; and promoting the future of vinyl." Don't know about you, but I have a nice stash of vinyl records from my younger days!

International Youth Day is a United-Nations-sponsored holiday, celebrating young adults and their quality of life.

Zimbabwe observes Armed Forces Day on August 12th, celebrating the formation of the Zimbabwe National Army in 1980.

Perseids Meteor Shower 2013

The 2013 Perseids Meteor Shower will be at its peak on August 11th through 12th in the hours before dawn. This is considered to be the best meteor shower of the year.

City lights, called light pollution, can interfere with viewing. So can reflected moonlight, but a  waxing crescent moon this year means the meteor shower will show its full glory.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation they appear to be near. The Perseids Meteor Shower appears near the constellation Perseus the Hero.

Work Like a Dog Day doesn't sound like much of a holiday. I guess it depends on what kind of dog. Police dogs work hard, as do guard dogs and service animals. My dog, on the other hand, just eats, sleeps, plays, and licks.

August 1st, 2013, kicks off the month with a crazy-long list of holidays: DOGust, National Girlfriends' Day, Rounds Resounding Day, Respect for Parents Day, Lughnasadh, Lammas Day, Minority Donor Awareness Day, Clergy Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention Day, Emancipation Day, Caribbean Day (proposed), Swiss National Day, and National Raspberry Cream Pie Day.

DOGust is the universal birthday for shelter dogs whose true birth date is unknown, as declared by the North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. National Girlfriends' Day is a great opportunity to have a girls' night out, a leisurely lunch, or even a long phone chat with your bestie while you lounge in fuzzy slippers and one of those blankets with sleeves.

Rounds Resounding Day was established in 1987 to celebrate the beauty and pure enjoyment of singing in the round. The mere mention of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" conjures up memories of childhood and simple joy. The motto for this day is: "As rounds re-sound and resound, all the world's joined in a circle of harmony."

Respect for Parents Day is an idea that's circulating and percolating on the net. I respect my parents (and miss them now that they're gone), and I treasure the opportunity I've been given to be a parent. A day to encourage respect for parents is a wonderful idea, as long as parents strive to be worthy of that respect.

August 1st is the Celtic harvest festival known as Lughnasash in Ireland, Lunasdal in Scotland, Laa Luanys in the Isle of Man, and Gwl Awst in Wales. In later times the festival came to be known as Lammas Day, celebrating the end of the "hungry gap" and the beginning of the harvest season.

Minorities are encouraged to learn more about organ, blood, and tissue donation - and consider becoming donors - on this day, Minority Donor Awareness Day.

Clergy Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention Day is meant to help people understand the nature of clergy sexual abuse and its prevalence in many religions around the globe. We can only hope that such awareness and understanding will lead to prevention in the future.

Emancipation Day commemorates the date in 1834 when the British Empire abolished chattel slavery within all of its colonies. This action brought freedom to many in parts of the Caribbean, Africa, Canada, India, China, Australia, and South America.

Caribbean Day is a holiday in the making, proposed by Hamilton Daley, Jamaican Attorney-at-Law. Mr. Hamilton writes, "The question I pose is whether the significance of the 1st August [as Emancipation Day] should be used as the centrifuge to detonate a positive force of global unity amongst Caribbean people; like an annual blossom - lasting just for a day - Caribbean Day....We should move away from the thinking which perceives the Caribbean Community as being founded on mere victims and castaways from Africa. We need to celebrate ourselves wholly as Caribbeans, and I suggest that we should globally conjoin on an annual basis to celebrate who we are."

Swiss National Day features a procession between Werdmühleplatz Square and Bürkliplatz in Zurich. Citizens and visitors enjoy food, drink, and folk dancing.

Last on this unusually long list of holidays is National Raspberry Cream Pie Day. Can't say I've ever had raspberry cream pie, but it sounds interesting.
