Play in the Sand Day, Raspberry Bombe Day, more

August 11th, 2013, is National Play in the Sand Day, Presidential Joke Day, Son's and Daughter's Day, Ingersoll Day, Annual Medical Check-Up Day, St. Clare of Assisi Feast Day, and National Raspberry Bombe Day.,

You're so lucky if you live near the beach. You're all set to celebrate National Play in the Sand Day.

Presidential Joke Day was born on this date in 1984. Then-President Ronald Reagan made an ill-conceived remark, not realizing a nearby microphone was live. Reagan joked that he had outlawed Russia and the bombing would begin in five minutes. Well, humor is subjective, right?

Today is Son's and Daughter's Day. Celebrate as you will, but most of us parents know that every day is pretty much Son's and Daughter's Day, with carpools, schedules, homework, laundry, guidance, and that pesky room and board.

Ingersoll Day celebrates the memory of Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899). He was a famous orator and free-thinker, known for his agnosticism and stance against slavery.
