As if anyone needs this holiday, November 25th is Shopping Reminder Day, to remind us that Christmas is exactly one month away.
The United Nations sponsors the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon writes: "I welcome the chorus of voices calling for an end to the violence that affects an estimated one in three women in her lifetime. I applaud leaders who are helping to enact and enforce laws and change mindsets. And I pay tribute to all those heroes around the world who help victims to heal and to become agents of change."
National Day of the Bible is observed on the Monday before Thanksgiving. One recommendation of the National Bible Association is to meet in a public place at noon on this date for scriptural readings.
Today is the Feast Day of Saint Catherine, patron saint of unmarried women, students, philosophers, craftsmen who use wheels, lacemakers, and milliners. French milliners parade their wares today, in honor of the single "Catherinettes" who wore special hats and made pilgrimage to Saint Catherine. According to fisheaters.com, women under 25 prayed, "Lord, give me a well-situated husband. Let him be gentle, rich, generous, and pleasant!" Women between 25 and 30 prayed, "Lord, one who's bearable, or who can at least pass as bearable in the world!" And those over 30 prayed, "Send whatever you want, lord; I'll take it!"
Suriname observes Independence Day on November 25th.
