Mutt Day, Walter Plinge Day, Fritters Day, more

December 2nd, 2011, is National Mutt Day, Walter Plinge Day, International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, Special Education Day, National Day (United Arab Emirates), National Day (Laos), and National Fritters Day.

Celebrate the lovable, loyal, one-of-a-kind dog on National Mutt Day. Even though mixed breeds tend to be healthier, they are less likely to be adopted than pure bred dogs.

The UK observes Walter Plinge Day, honoring a London pub owner. Plinge allowed actors to credit his name in theatrical programs, to conceal the fact that one actor was playing more than one role in a production. The United States observes a similar holiday, George Spelvin Day, on November 15th.

The United Nations supports International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on December 2nd. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon writes, "To eradicate contemporary forms of slavery, we need new strategies and measures that can unite all actors. While Governments bear the primary responsibility, the private sector has an integral role to play."

Special Education Day commemorates the anniversary of IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, enacted on this date in 1975.

The United Arab Emirates observes National Day on December 2nd.

Laos also observes National Day today.

Today's foodie holiday is National Fritters Day. Fry up a batch of small cakes, sweet or savory, as a snack or a meal.
