The earth travels around the sun on a slightly elliptical path. Every July the earth reaches aphelion, its farthest point from the sun. About six months later, in January, the earth reaches perihelion, its closest point to the sun. At aphelion the earth is 94.5 million miles from the sun.

According to Merriam-Webster, the first syllables of aphelion can be pronounced as "a feel" or "app heel." Your choice. Either way, you're bound to impress your friends with your knowledge.
