Gold Star Mother's Day is always observed on the last Sunday in September. Families often hung service flags with stars for each family member in service - blue stars for active, gold stars for the deceased. The day was originally established in honor of mothers who lost sons or daughters in wartime, but today American Gold Star Mothers are "mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country." Take a moment to consider the sacrifices many have made to preserve our freedom.
Today is known as Checkers Day and Dogs in Politics Day, both thanks to Richard Nixon. While running for Vice President in 1952, he gave a September 23rd speech that came to be known as the "Checkers Speech." Checkers was the Nixon family dog.
